Marka masks are made of hardwood, copper and brass sheet. Their elongated surfaces are often more or less completely covered with metal.
The Marka are a Mande subgroup whose settlement region extends from the north of the Bamana (southwestern Mali) to the Senegalese border. Along the Niger River, the Marka use their masks in ceremonies related to fishing and agriculture.
