This wooden wheel is a beautiful decorative piece. It was once a part of a spinning wheel, known as a Charkha, used for spinning cotton fibers.
In the 20th century, the Charkha became a symbol of Gandhi's movement for Indian independence. As a tool for the emancipation of the Indian people from British colonization, Gandhi used the Charkha to empower the poor population to spin cotton with simple means, regaining their financial autonomy.
