UNIQUE PIECE
In the heart of Central India - across the tribal regions of states like Odisha, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh - live communities such as the Santal, Kondh, and Muria, whose traditions have endured for generations. Their homes tell stories not only through rituals and customs but through the doors that guard their thresholds. These doors are far more than functional objects - they are storytellers in wood.
Carved in low relief, the surfaces are adorned with animals, symbols, and scenes from daily tribal life. The style of carving varies by tribe, from more rudimentary, expressive forms to highly decorative motifs. Rosette carvings are especially common and add a delicate, ornamental character to many of these doors. Each animal carries a symbolic weight: the fish represents fertility, the turtle stands for stability, and the tiger for courage. Yet not all symbols are universally understood - many are rooted in the personal histories of the families who lived behind these doors.
This original Indian door, made from solid teak wood, beautifully captures that cultural legacy. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Outdoors, its color will naturally weather into a silvery grey over time, adding to its character.
The door features two sturdy iron rings on the back, allowing it to be displayed as a decorative piece - perhaps as a striking headboard or a statement above your sofa. Please be mindful of its substantial weight when choosing how to hang it. The original iron hinges are still attached; however, wall-mounting brackets are not included.
