Unique wooden object of a tribal horse with riders, from Central Flores, Indonesia, mid to late 20th century. The object was part of the roof structure of a traditional ceremonial site.
In Eastern Indonesia, horses are symbols of nobility, status, and power. First introduced from India in the early historical period, horses played an important role in the culture and mythology of the eastern Indonesian islands, particularly Flores and Sumba.
The object has received a wonderful patina through the years and weather. Cracks in the wood and small imperfections only make the piece more beautiful and valuable.
