Description

Originally used by Chinese scholars to prepare ink for calligraphy, these carved inkstones were an essential part of the traditional scholar's study. A solid ink stick was ground with water in the shallow basin to create the ink needed for writing and painting by hand.

Dating to the late 19th century, each piece reflects more than a century of history. Today, they are appreciated far beyond their original purpose. Whether placed on a coffee table, combined with books, styled on a console or displayed on open shelving, they stand out through their authentic worn surfaces, carved details and remarkable history.

More than a decorative object, each inkstone reflects centuries of craftsmanship and the quiet rituals of Chinese scholars.
