Black-glazed earthenware from Shanxi Province, China. Vessels like this were originally used to store food, oil, or fermented products.
A particularly large and very heavy example, with a full rounded body. The thick black glaze has developed a heavily aged, almost crackled surface with layers of wear and irregularities throughout. Its substantial weight, solid form, and pronounced patina set it apart from the smaller storage jars of this type.
Glazing on both inside and outside. One-of-one piece.
