Als wesentlicher Bestandteil der landwirtschaftlichen Kultur Botswanas werden Körbe seit Tausenden von Jahren traditionell hergestellt und verwendet:
Geschlossene Körbe mit Deckel für die Lagerung von Getreide und Samen, schalenförmige Körbe zum Tragen von Gegenständen auf dem Kopf.
Der Hauptrohstoff für die Herstellung von Botswana-Körben ist die Faser der „pflanzlichen Elfenbein“-Palme (Hyphaene petersiana), in Botswana „Mokola“ genannt. Für aufwendige Designs wird die natürliche cremefarbene Palmenfaser mit den Wurzeln oder der Rinde der Bäume Motlhakola (Euclea divinorun) und Motsentsila (Berchemia discolor) in Brauntönen gefärbt.
