Traditional Tonga basket from the region Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. With an elaborate pattern.
Handcrafted from Ilala palm trees, these Tonga baskets were traditionally used as grain storage bins. Millet and corn are stored in these conical-shaped containers for the long winter after harvest, the grains are then beaten into the traditional fine flour.
The Batonga are known for their fine weaving, a skill that has been passed on from mother to daughter for generations.
